Position Description:

Washington College is seeking qualified applicants for the GIS Analyst I position. The GIS Analyst I is an entry-level position who utilizes Geographic Information System techniques to provide a better understanding of certain variables in a given geographic location. Primary duties include extracting data from GIS software, using varying analysis methods to arrive at results, recommending appropriate reactionary strategies in response to GIS analysis, and providing maps and data sets to clients to supplement analysis. This position serves as a mentor for multiple student interns by training them in GIS software and map creation, and providing helpful and constructive feedback on their products. The successful applicant will report to the Washington College GIS Program Director and/or Project Manager, and is located in the GIS office in Chestertown, Maryland.

Essential Functions:
Design, develop, and create databases, maps, and other related analysis products.
Ability to understand and adapt to new datasets.
Keep all project information current and organized to assure accessibility to others.
Provide technical support of GIS equipment, software, data, and products.
Efficiently communicate findings of analysis of datasets to customers.
Effectively analyze, correct, and update large datasets for accuracy.
Perform Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) on all products.
Oversee and train multiple student interns.
Attend and present at professional conferences.

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred, or a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in GIS field.

Experience and Background:
Fundamental knowledge and skill in operation of GIS equipment, including computer hardware, GPS, and plotter/printer setup.
Familiarity with Microsoft Access, Excel, and databases.
Experience using ArcGIS software; including ArcGIS Online, ArcMap, and ArcGIS Pro.
Basic cartography skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment, establish methodology to complete a project, and produce final products within a given timeframe.
Possess good analytical and problem solving skills.
Possess strong communication and leadership skills.
A basic understanding of concepts behind data management in a database.
Ability to pass a Maryland and FBI criminal records background check.
