The Enterprise GIS Manager is responsible for overseeing Geographic Information System (GIS) functions within the Physical Facilities (PF) department at Brigham Young University. This includes managing the department’s enterprise GIS infrastructure, chairing the Campus Mapping Committee, maintaining and enhancing the online BYU Campus Map, and supporting other PF departments in establishing and integrating GIS tools into their operations. The Enterprise GIS Manager directs the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of GIS servers, spatial databases, applications, and campus mapping systems to support Physical Facilities operations and university-wide decision-making.
This position supervises student interns and coordinates with external GIS consultants or service providers as needed to supplement internal resources, deliver specialized applications, and maintain high-performing enterprise systems. The Enterprise GIS Manager ensures the integrity, security, and accessibility of geospatial data while aligning with IT standards, accessibility requirements, and long-term campus planning needs.
What you’ll do in this position:
Manager: Chair of the Campus Mapping Committee
Lead the Campus Mapping Committee, fostering collaboration among departments to represent and address stakeholder needs and updated to the BYU online campus map. (map.byu.edu)
Oversee the technical development and maintenance of the online campus map in coordination with IT and GIS professionals, ensuring alignment with enterprise systems and cybersecurity standards.
Enhance the map’s usability and accessibility by soliciting user feedback, considering the needs of diverse stakeholders (including those with disabilities), and integrating new data layers and features.
Develop and enforce policies and procedures for campus mapping data, including data sharing, privacy, and intellectual property management.
Anticipate and plan for future trends in GIS and mapping technologies to ensure the map remains current, functional, and strategically valuable to the campus community.
GIS Application Development and Mapping
Lead the design, development, and maintenance of GIS databases, applications, and mapping tools that support Physical Facilities operations.
Maintain and update accurate spatial data layers for campus infrastructure, utilities, and other assets to support asset management and cross-departmental integration.
Manage the accuracy and currency of PF maps and the campus online map, ensuring changes to infrastructure are reflected promptly.
Design systems and workflows that improve efficiency and effectiveness of PF processes through geospatial technology.
GIS Enterprise Management
Manage enterprise GIS infrastructure, including servers, databases, and web applications, ensuring performance, reliability, and security.
Administer system maintenance, database optimization, backup and recovery, access control, and other core IT functions that support data integrity and scalability.
Implement automated workflows and monitoring tools to enhance system efficiency and reduce risk.
Evaluate emerging GIS technologies and recommend improvements to strengthen the enterprise environment and meet evolving PF and campus needs.
Coordinate with external GIS consultants, contractors, or service providers as needed to assist with enterprise system maintenance, database optimization, or specialized application development
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Support
Provide ongoing technical support and guidance to PF depts. to ensure effective use of GIS tools and high-quality, consistent spatial data.
Establish and enforce GIS standards, protocols, and data governance practices to ensure accuracy, compatibility, and long-term usability across systems.
Develop and deliver training programs for staff and student interns, including mentoring in map creation, application development, and data management.
Deploy and support GIS applications in desktop, web, and server environments, tailored to meet department needs.
What qualifies you for this role:
Required

Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Science & Technology or equivalent
8-10 years of experience in GIS development, management, and administration
Experience with infrastructure and utilities management
Proficient use of the CAD software program AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D by Autodesk
Proficient in GIS programming and system automation
Professional GIS Certification such as GISP (Certified GIS Professional) or equivalent
Excellent verbal and written communication including in-person, phone, web-based, email, proposals, and technical documents
Strong project management and team leadership skills
Collect, create, organize, and manage geographic data and maps
Perform geoprocessing and geospatial analysis
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver projects on time
Preferred
Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geospatial Science & Technology or equivalent
8-10 years of experience in GIS development, management, and administration
Experience with infrastructure and utilities management
Proficient use of the CAD software program AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D by Autodesk
Proficient in GIS programming and system automation
Professional GIS Certification such as GISP (Certified GIS Professional) or equivalent
Train others to use GIS, perform processing and achieve results

Typical Starting Pay: $82,000.00 to $106,500.00
