Position Description:
Geospatial Engineer
GeoAcuity, LLC
Location: Fully remote (U.S.)
Type: Full-time
We are seeking a fully-remote Geospatial Engineer to join GeoAcuity's team supporting a satellite-based wildfire detection program. Working alongside our senior geospatial architect and GIS developers, this engineer will help build, operate, and improve the cloud architecture that ingests, processes, catalogs, and distributes satellite imagery (Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs) and derived fire products (GeoParquet) on ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes and ArcGIS Online in AWS. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable automating imagery pipelines in Python, administering Esri Enterprise, and building the services and applications that put fire data in users' hands.
Key Responsibilities:
• Imagery ETL & Automation: Build and improve Python automation for imagery ETL and data processing, moving satellite imagery (COGs) and GeoParquet products into published services; monitor pipelines and respond to failures.
• ETL Workflow Development: Develop ETL processes and workflows for new products and partner data deliveries, including receipt, validation, staging, and cataloging.
• GIS Services & Applications: Operate and maintain GIS services, web maps, dashboards, and web apps across ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online, including ArcGIS-based system health dashboards.
• Enterprise Administration: Support ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes and classic ArcGIS Enterprise in AWS, including patching, upgrades, capacity, backup and recovery, and promotion across development, test, and production.
• Catalog Search & Discovery: Improve how the imagery catalog is searched and discovered, including SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) items, metadata, and image service configuration.
• Data Extraction & Delivery: Develop and support access-controlled download services that let authorized users clip imagery and vector products by area and time, package them, and receive a download link.
• Performance & Troubleshooting: Analyze and tune performance, and troubleshoot to root cause across Esri services, Kubernetes workloads, databases, and AWS infrastructure.
• Security & Access: Support identity-provider integration (SAML/OpenID Connect), role-based access, and encryption configuration on Esri services in line with NIST SP 800-53 controls.
• Testing, Release & Documentation: Support functional and regression testing and release readiness, and maintain runbooks, as-built documentation, and demonstration and training materials.
Required Qualifications:
• Experience: 3+ years in geospatial engineering, enterprise GIS administration, or GIS development.
• Geospatial Stack: Esri geospatial stack, including ArcGIS Pro, plus open-source and OGC tools and standards (GDAL/OGR, PostGIS, WMS/WMTS/WFS, OGC API).
• ArcGIS Enterprise Administration: Classic (Windows/Linux) and ArcGIS Enterprise on Kubernetes in a cloud environment, including federation, Data Store, and security configuration.
• Portal & Esri Apps: ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and ArcGIS Online content management, and Esri apps including Dashboards, Experience Builder, Instant Apps, and Web AppBuilder.
• Python: ArcPy, GDAL, and the ArcGIS API for Python for automation, geoprocessing, and scheduled jobs.
• Custom Web Application Development: Comfortable on both front-end and back-end, including JavaScript/TypeScript, the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, and REST APIs.
• Enterprise Geodatabase: Enterprise geodatabase tasks, including schema design, versioning, and maintenance on PostgreSQL or SQL Server.
• Imagery & Raster: Imagery and raster data management and Esri imagery workflows (mosaic datasets, image and tile services), plus cloud-native formats such as COG, GeoParquet, and STAC.
• Spatial Analysis & Mapping: Spatial analysis, cartography, and map and service publishing.
• AWS Cloud Services: Hands-on experience with services such as S3 (including lifecycle and Glacier), EC2, EKS, IAM, KMS, and CloudWatch; Kubernetes and containerization (Docker, Helm, kubectl) a plus.
• Version Control & DevOps: Git, CI/CD pipelines, and issue tracking in an Agile team.
• Communication: Clear written and verbal communication with teammates and client technical staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Remote Sensing: Experience with satellite imagery, processing levels, and thermal/infrared or fire detection products.
• Certifications: Esri ArcGIS Enterprise Administration certification (Associate or Professional); AWS certification (Solutions Architect, SysOps, or Developer).
• Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, CloudFormation, or Helm for repeatable deployments.
• Cloud-Native Geospatial Tools: STAC API, rasterio, TiTiler, DuckDB, or similar open-source tooling.
• Domain Experience: Wildfire, emergency management, or Earth observation programs.
• Travel: Ability to travel occasionally (up to quarterly) for onsite client meetings in Colorado.
